چکیده

In many applications, such as inverse dithering, it is necessary to increase the pixel bit-depth of images by expanding q -bit integer values to m -bit integer values ( q m > ). This paper describes a simple and efficient method that uses bit replication, instead of conventional multiplication, to achieve this expansion. First, we show that the optimal number of repetitions is given by } / { ceiling q m and that the method is equivalent to multiplication by the ideal gain when q m / is an integer. We then demonstrate that, in the case where q m / is not an integer, truncating the fraction bits to the right of the decimal point will lead to zero average error. The paper also includes two suggestions for implementing the bit-replication process, both of which have a vast complexity advantage over a multiplier. Two examples are given at the end to illustrate the bit-replication process in action.

Planelet Transform: A New Geometrical Wavelet for Compression of Kinect-like Depth Images

With the advent of cheap indoor RGB-D sensors, proper representation of piecewise planar depth images is crucial toward an effective compression method. Although there exist geometrical wavelets for optimal representation of piecewise constant and piecewise linear images (i.e. wedgelets and platelets), an adaptation to piecewise linear fractional functions which correspond to depth variation ov...

Visually Lossless Coding in HEVC: A High Bit Depth and 4: 4: 4 Capable JND-Based Perceptual Quantisation Technique for HEVC

Due to the increasing prevalence of high bit depth and YCbCr 4:4:4 video data, it is desirable to develop a JND-based visually lossless coding technique which can account for high bit depth 4:4:4 data in addition to standard 8-bit precision chroma subsampled data. In this paper, we propose a Coding Block (CB)-level JND-based luma and chroma perceptual quantisation technique for HEVC named Pixel...

Fast Sub-pixel Motion Estimation by Means of One-Bit Transform

In this study sub-pixel motion estimation using one-bit transform is presented. The utilization of low bit depth representations for full-pixel motion estimation exist in the literature [1,7]. However sub-pixel motion estimation employing these kinds of transforms has not been tried until now. In this paper, it is shown that one-bit transform can also be utilized for sub-pixel motion estimation...

Low-memory low-complexity inverse dithering

Dithering an image decreases the pixel bit depth and reduces the storage space required in the image buffer while largely preserving the perceptual quality. In some applications, it is desirable to reconstruct the original image; that is, restore the dithered image to its original bit-depth, for further processing or display. In this paper, we present a new color inverse dithering system design...

Gray-scale resolution enhancement

The number of bits assigned to represent the color intensity at image pixels is usually referred as the bit depth. When the bit depth is not sufficient, images suffer from ridge-like structures known as false contours. Bit-depth limitations become important when low-contrast details are required, as in medical imaging, aerial/satellite photography, and high-quality scanning applications. In thi...
